Video Games Featuring Arianrhod
Arianrhod is a figure that appears in the medieval Welsh texts of the Mabinogion. Specifically, Arianrhod plays a role in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, Math fab Mathonwy, in which she places a curse on Lleu Llaw Gyffes, one of the two sons she magically gives birth to.
Caer Arianrhod (Arianrhod’s Fortress) was said to be her home, given as a visible location in the sea of northwest Wales, while “Caer Arianrhod” is the Welsh name for the constellation Corona Borealis.
Her name is formed of two Welsh words: arian, meaning “silver”, and rhod, meaning “wheel” or “orb”, giving her the alternate name of “Silver Wheel”. However, her name may derive from the earlier Aranrot, where aran may mean “humped”, “round”, or “huge”.
In some circles – perhaps due to her connection to Corona Borealis, her interpretation as the “Silver Wheel”, and her role in the Mabinogi story – Arianrhod is depicted as a goddess of the moon, stars, time, rebirth, and other themes and elements.
