The plot of this game involves the main character, Yugi, being transported to the 15th century and taking on the role of Henry Tudor during the Wars of the Roses. This civil war involved the House of Lancaster and House of York in a battle for the English throne.
Henry Tudor was born in Wales and had Welsh ancestry, claiming to descend from Cadwaladr ap Cadwallon, once a King of Gwynedd and, mythologically speaking, was the last in an ancient line to hold the title King of Britain.
Yugi, in Henry Tudor’s role, is introduced to the player as the “Last Prince of Lancaster, a true Welshman”. He goes on to say his “troops will land in Milford Haven, Wales, and march on to face the enemy at Bosworth Field!”, referencing the real-life events that took place in 1485 in which Henry defeated Richard III, leading to his crowning as King Henry VII.
The final boss of the game is Manawyddan fab Llyr. Although spelled slightly differently in the game, he takes his name from the mythological Manawydan fab Llŷr, notable for his appearances in the Second and Third Branches of the Mabinogi. The Four Branches, as well as many other mythical Welsh tales, are collected in The Mabinogion, and are some of the earliest prose stories in the literature of Britain, written in Welsh.
