Excalibur and Caliburn are weapons that can be obtained in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles – Echoes of Time.

In Arthurian tales, Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, with its name ultimately deriving from the Welsh Caledfwlch, where caled means ‘hard’ and bwlch is ‘cleft’. It appears in many interpretations of the stories of King Arthur, but it is first mentioned in Welsh mythology, including the earliest surviving Welsh tale, Culhwch and Olwen (Culhwch ac Olwen).

The Welsh historian Geoffrey of Monmouth Latinised the sword Caledfwlch as Caliburnus in the Historia Regum Britanniae, fictitious chronicles of the kings of Britain that included legends of King Arthur. Caliburnus became known by many variations in different Arthurian tales, including Caliburn, with Excalibur now the most familiar.

Another sword that can be acquired is the Avalon Guard. King Arthur was said to be taken to the mythical isle of Avalon to recover from the wounds he sustained in the Battle of Camlann.

The description for the Noble Knight Mallet says it was “used by one of the knights of the round table”, referencing King Arthur’s knights.

There is a weapon called the Camelot Lance, which may reference the mythical castle and court of King Arthur. Camelot first appeared in French Arthurian legends, but its naming origins may be Welsh, possibly coming from the Battle of Camlann, or “Cavalon“, a corruption of Avalon. Confusion over Arthur’s court at the Welsh town of Caerleon could also have caused his capital to become “Cavalon“.
