Like in the first Destiny game, there are many Welsh references in Destiny 2.
A vehicle named Dinas Emrys is present in Destiny 2. It features a red and white colour style, and a red dragon logo. This may reference the place in Wales called Dinas Emrys (Welsh for “Emrys’ City”).
In Welsh legend, Dinas Emrys was the place where two battling dragons – one red and one white – were buried by Lludd, ruler of Britain. It was Myrddin Emrys (Merlin Ambrosius) that later determined that the reason the hillfort towers in this location could not stand was due to these dragons’ endless battles below.
The in-game description for the Dinas Emrys vehicle reads as follows:
“Watch for the red dragon. Here’s a hint: It’ll be ahead of you.” —Ariadne Gris
Gofannon Forge is a location in Destiny 2. Gofannon was a smith god in Welsh literature, and the son of the goddess Dôn.
The Abyss Defiant auto rifle may also contain a Welsh reference. The weapon’s flavour text, which reads, “We will not go quietly”, may derive from the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas’ literary work, “Do not go gentle into that good night”.
The Pouka beings may reference the mythical Celtic creature known in Welsh as pwca.
Introduced in the expansion The Edge of Fate, the character Lodi mentions that he knows Welsh.
In one instance of dialogue in the Renegades expansion, Lodi says the following:
“Listen, give me a call next time you can’t sleep, I could use company. We can go for a walk and keep working on Welsh. There’s something I need to think about. Hwyl fawr.”
Hwyl fawr is Welsh for “goodbye”.
