About Wales in Games

A passion project combining Wales and video games

Croeso! Welcome to Wales in Games – a website dedicated to documenting video games that reference the country of Wales.

My name is Aaron, a passionate Welshman born and bred in Wales. Playing video games is one of my favourite hobbies, and I have long had a desire to see Wales and Welsh culture represented more in the medium.

It is always exciting whenever I come across a Welsh reference in a game, and for years I have wanted to create a single resource that accumulates these nods to Wales in one place. I finally acted on my enthusiasm to put this passion project together in 2023.

I take great pleasure in the discovery and recording of Welsh references in games, however big or small they are, dedicating hundreds of hours of research to be as in-depth and accurate as I can.

Documenting a variety of unique Welsh references

With video games taking on all manner of genres and gameplay experiences, it is only natural that the types of allusions to Wales vary greatly. While some are obvious in their Welsh inspirations, others are less clear.

My aim is to put together comprehensive lists of different types of Welsh references that span as wide an array of video games as possible.

Games that take place in locations across Wales; games that incorporate Cymraeg, the Welsh language; games that draw upon Welsh mythology for their narratives; games that feature characters known to be Welsh or have Welsh ancestry, or speak with Welsh accents or dialects – they will be listed here.

In addition, I want Wales in Games to shine a spotlight on the many Welsh developers and Welsh actors that bring the games that we play to life. With dedicated pages for known studios and actors based in or from Wales, I aim to list their projects and hope to bring more awareness to their talents.

This is a constantly-expanding project that requires a lot of time and research. As such, there may be games or references missing until I can properly get around to verifying them and dedicating the necessary attention to them. I’m only one human and I may make mistakes, but I am passionate and committed, and will do my best to keep the site up to date.

I am always happy to be contacted about a missing reference or possible correction, so please do reach out to me if you wish.

Encouraging more and better Welsh representation

As well as Wales in Games acting as an archive that logs these findings, part of what I want to achieve with this site is better representation for Wales and Welsh people within video games.

Welsh influence can be seen and heard all over the world through books, television shows and movies, and although it definitely exists in video games, it can be difficult to find. My hope is that by highlighting and bringing attention to the games that reference Wales, a discussion can be had that pushes for stronger Welsh presence that better reflects who we are and where we come from.

Wales is a country rich in history, with an enduring language, culture and mythical tales that go back centuries. Although it has been a pleasant experience to uncover many games that draw inspiration from Wales in various ways, it feels like we have barely scratched the surface of the types of games that can be created through Welsh stories, characters and locations.

Even if it is in a minor way, I hope the work I do promotes Wales through the world of video games, and contributes to an increase in Welsh-inspired games and characters that Welsh people can relate to.

A Welsh and Welsh-curious community

My final desire for Wales in Games is for it to be a positive and welcoming community that brings people together whether they are Welsh or not.

The Welsh are passionate people that bond over their pride for Wales, and we are always keen to share knowledge of our country and culture with others around the world.

I hope that through this project we can share even more Welsh joy with each other and educate others that may be curious about Wales through the medium of video games.

I appreciate you visiting Wales in Games. Diolch yn fawr!
