Welsh developer Huw Millward has launched a Kickstarter campaign for his next video game.
Slumbox is a cyberpunk life simulation RPG, with the player attempting to survive and move their way up through the harsh realities of a class-divided city. Work a regular 9-5, pay your bills, earn promotions, play video games, or tackle the districts in more brutal fashion, taking out gangs and dealing with law enforcement.
Late last year, Wales in Games spoke to Huw about Slumbox and the vast range of ideas he has planned for the game, where he is aiming for this to be one of the biggest indie RPGs out there. Following the success of his debut title Warsim, Huw went from solo developer to leader when he set up the multi-man team of Worldviper Studios, with the scope of Slumbox demanding the extra hands.
With that jump from solo developer to running a team, though – on top of the scale of the game – there is a need for funding. The Kickstarter has a target of £30,000, with Huw feeling this was the best path for Slumbox, instead of opting for a publisher that may have put quick profits over creativity.
Even at this early stage, the upcoming project has accumulated two world records in the form of the most comic books in a video game and the biggest soundtrack in an indie game. Predominantly filled with songs from Welsh bands, Huw hopes Slumbox‘s success can also lead to equally good things for the music scene in Wales, giving these overlooked artists the attention they deserve.
Check out some videos below of Huw detailing Slumbox, as well as an early look at gameplay, and catch up on my interview with the project lead himself.
