Hungry Horrors, the debut game from Clumsy Bear Studio, has now launched into Steam Early Access.
This mythical “feed ’em up” sees players cooking recipes familiar to those across Britain and Ireland, and feeding them to legendary folkloric creatures. The young princess on this adventure refrains from direct combat, relying on her culinary skills to fend off mythical monsters of all kinds.
In roguelite fashion, players choose their ingredients and cook up dishes in the comfort of a castle, building up their card deck of recipes before setting out on runs through caves, bogs and other locales. Each area the princess enters may present a new mythical challenge, and can include hungry interpretations of various British and Irish creatures, including Welsh fiends such as Fad Felen, Afanc and the Water Leaper (Llamhigyn y Dŵr).
As well as dishes from other regions, a selection of Welsh recipes can be whipped up and fed to the starving foes, including crempog and tatws pum munud (five-minute potatoes). Expect plenty more Welsh creatures and food to appear as progress is made through the game, with a handy lore book available for the princess to learn about the origins of each creature and recipe.
The two-man team at Clumsy Bear Studio hopes to release the full game within a year, depending on feedback received from players.
Hungry Horrors is available for purchase in Steam Early Access now, with a launch discount of 30%.
